Village Elders Donate Land for Community Center
31 May, 2012
Karachi Jadeed has joined the ranks of those villages who have donated land to the Imran Khan Foundation to build a community center as a recognition of their appreciation and support for the work that is being done in their community. At a courtyard meeting on site in Jaffarabad, the local leader Mubarik Domki informed the visiting IKF team, led by CEO Naseem ur-Rehman, that the village has taken up the responsibility of providing food to the labour and masons who are working on this project around the clock. Securing skilled labour is a big challenge in Jaffarabad because not too many people are willing to work in this highly volatile province. However, our partner, YMSESDO, was able to come forward and mobilize the required labour and the community to collaboratively move the work forward.
Already the village is emerging with clear cut blocks of houses and a design for the streets, pavements and safe drinking water. This is the first Village Development project undertaken in Baluchistan and given the outpouring of support from the residents of Karachi Jadeed it seems unlikely to be our last.
Ghulam Akbar, another community representative announced the donation of 2 Kanals of land for the community center. The Community Elders Network also shared their appreciation for the work that is being done there and agreed to mobilize a team of Young Village Volunteers, which can be trained to carry on programs in the areas of health care, education and social development.
The meeting demonstrated that the level of confidence that exists between the IKF, the implementing partners and the community is rare. Despite the extreme heat that is typical of Jaffarabad this time of year, village reconstruction is moving forward at a fast pace and it is anticipated that Karachi Jadeed, along with its new infrastructure will be ready by the end of June. Stay tuned for more information.
