Water Workshop for Young Village Volunteers

19 Feb, 2012

The first of four IKF sponsored safe drinking water workshops has been conducted in Tando Mohammad Khan.  As many as 60 of the IKF’s YVVs in the district were in attendance at the workshop which was presided over by IKF CEO Naseem ur-Rehman with support from Anjum Khan, the field team leader.

The purpose of these workshops is not only to ensure that villagers have access to drinking water but that it is also safe for consumption.  In the first session, there was a candid discussion on water and sanitation issues at the village level and how these issues are compounded by global, national and regional developments and natural disasters, which have added to the potable water crisis in their villages (and thousands of others in Pakistan).  Moving on,  the focus shifted to building awareness about the sources of water, threats towards contamination of drinking water and its adverse impact on morbidity and mortality.  The YVVs were informed about how the cost of not ensuring safe water also results in heavy expenses on the part of poor village people for treatment and curative medicine to     combat the rampant ailments like diarrhea and more severe diseases like malaria, hepatitis and others.

Later on, the workshop focused on training; imparting practical skills for water testing, keeping sources of water clean and ensuring that water collection, storage and disposal is taken care of at the source and also in the home and the village itself.  It is envisioned that by engaging the YVVs on safe drinking water and providing them a few tools to ensure the water is drinkable, a significant impact can be made in lessening the incidence of the ailments and diseases that run rampant among the neediest flood affectees of Sindh.  Over the next week to ten days, three more workshops are to be conducted in Badin, Mirpurkhas and Sanghar to gear up our village volunteer force for the installation of safe drinking water hand pumps in as many as 2000 locations all over the 4 districts.  Stay tuned.
