A Happy Eid Beckons New Homeowners in Sonmiani

10 Aug, 2012

With the major construction phase of the Village Development Program in Rajanpur nearing its conclusion, families have begun to move into their homes.  Over 200 families from 15 Bastis in the Union Council Sonmiani have taken possession whilst the remaining families will move into their homes by August 30th 2012 when all homes planned will be completed.

Mir Allah Buksh, a resident of Basti Hussain Buksh told us that, “there is a feeling of hope and optimism among my family members like I have not seen in a very long time.”  He said, “I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams that the IKF would come through on its promise.  Inspired by the work of the IKF, the communities have begun the process of beautifying their own villages through the plantation of trees and shrubs.  In Basti Hussain Buksh the villagers have also, on instruction of the IKF team, built walls to cordon off their livestock from the courtyards where their children play.  This simple act ensures that the common areas in the village are cleaner than they used to be prior to this intervention.  It is hoped that the other Bastis in Sonmiani will follow suit.

Immediately following Eid, the IKF is set to begin work on upgrading basic community infrastructure.  Roads are to be soled and solar lighting systems are to be installed in all the Bastis.  Furthermore, work is set to begin on a community center and land is being identified for building a set of quality schools that will cater to the educational needs of the rural population in UC Sonmiani.  With community participation as high as it is, it seems likely that with the continued support of the IKF and its donors, the social uplift of Sonmiani may continue.
