Earthquake Relief Initiative in Chitral District ( 26th Oct, 2015 Earthquake)
16 Nov, 2015
Imran khan Foundation’s team had been working in the District of Chitral helping the farmers who had lost their crops in the flash floods that decimated the area in early August of 2015. On 26th October, while the team was returning from the area to of Garam Chashma to reach its base camp in Chitral Town; the team experienced the full brunt of the 26th October Earthquake that had its epicenter and few hundred miles way across the border in Afghanistan.
On the directives of Board Members and the Chaiman Imran Khan; the IKF sent further reinforcements to Chitral in the immediate aftermath of the Earthquake. And within the first week of the disaster; two teams had facilitated 250 affected families and positively impacted lives of nearly 1800 people in three Union Councils of Chitral (Ayun, Koh & Laspur). Each affected family whose house had been damaged has by now been facilitated with a winterized tent and blankets to offer them warmth in the ever-increasing cold of the Chitrali winter.
The remoteness of the affected area and the provision of relief items given scarce infrastructural system make the task difficult. Our team has collaborated closely with Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP), district administration and local community networks to provide the affected people with basic shelter items so they can find some sense of comfort in the upcoming harsh winter in the North.
An IKF team is still working in the area and performing a dual role: Completion of IKF’s Farmer Rehabilitation Program and further assessment for sustained development after the 26th October Earthquake.
More needs to be done; and IKF will remain true to its commitment to reach those people who are often not reached in a post-disaster situation because of the remoteness of their location. May the ever-smiling and resilient people of Chitral and other affected areas be blessed with prosperity.
