Chitral Rehabilitation Schemes & Development Projects
05 May, 2016
Imran Khan Foundation has started working on two main projects in Chitral: Holistic Rehabilitation Scheme & Youth Development through Sports Initiative.
Chitral has been specifically chosen as the area of intervention by IKF because it was affected by two natural disasters in the fall of 2015 (August Flash-Floods & October Earthquake)
An approximate of 100,000 lives will be positively impacted by the Rehabilitation Schemes worth Rs. 23 Million in Chitral that include projects such as the installation of Micro-hydal channels and transmission lines to provide electricity for small-scale consumption, construction of irrigation channels, building of Link Roads that shall connect remote areas to town centers, provision of safe drinking water to the segments of population and construction of protection walls to safeguard vulnerable areas from rising river water levels.
Also through the Youth Development through Sports initiative an approximate of 50,000 lives will be positively impacted. The plan includes setting up of grounds and other relevant support structures to improve the participation in sporting activities within the area. This sports project of IKF is in line with the international trend towards using sports as an agent of social change and development. As the United Nations Declaration for Sustainable Development Agenda states:
“Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.”
Imran Khan Foundation is planning and implementing the aforementioned projects in Chitral through a strategic collaboration with Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP) and other community stakeholders. Initial preparations and baseline analysis have been conducted and soon the implementation phase of the projects will commence.
